We all strive to eat well, but, according to a 2012 study, nearly 97% of Americans don’t consume nearly enough fiber. Eating the proper amount of fiber per day has a magnitude of health benefits. The human body is unable to break down cellulose, a large component of many plants, thus, dietary fiber remains relatively intact as it passes through your stomach, small intestine, colon, and eventually, out of your body.

While it may not seem like it has a great impact on your health, consuming the proper amount of fiber can contribute to the prevention of diverticula (small pouches) in the colon, aid with weight loss and even lower “bad” cholesterol or LDL levels.

How much is enough? Men under the age of 50 are estimated to need about 38 grams of fiber per day; women under 50, approximately 25 grams per day. Men over 50 need about 30 grams of fiber, whereas women over 50 need about 21 grams per day.

Good sources of fiber include: Whole-grains, fruits, vegetables, beans, peas, legumes, nuts and seeds.

Try introducing some of these foods to your diet to reap the health benefits!
