Food is to the body what gas is to your car. Without fueling up either one of them, you won’t get too far. Before you hit the gym, go for a bike ride, run or swim, eat smart to energize your workout. This is where carbs – especially a mix of complex and simple ones are your friends. Simple carbs will get you going, while the delayed release action of complex carbs will keep you going throughout your workout. Here are some ideas:

-Whole grain cereal and fruit, such as oatmeal with bananas
-Whole grain toast with peanut butter and apple slices
    -Greek yogurt and low-fat granola
    -Protein and carb balanced smoothie

Water goes with everything – before, during and after your workout. Keeping yourself hydrated is just as important and keeping yourself fueled up. In fact, the water helps get the nutrients, oxygen and blood to your muscles while you exercise.

If you know from experience that you are always starving after a workout, then your body is telling you that you need more pre-workout fuel. Another solution to this problem is working out before one of your larger meals of the day – say lunch or dinner. According to Emily Brown, RD at the Mayo Clinic, this will satisfy your hunger without blowing your calorie consumption out of the water.
